Our Story
IT ALL STARTED WITH A DREAM
& A PRAYER...
Changa, a human development consultant & master yogi and Devonna a homeschooler; both were running a non profit in Baltimore City, Maryland. As Devonna looked for ways to enrich the education of their children, Changa and quite a few of the children were struggling with stress induced health issues and debilitating allergies. They realized the quality of life they lived was directly impacted by their environment and connection with it. Knowing this, Devonna was always struggling to source the quality of ingredients she was seeking, particularly the items they spent the most on in the market: eggs, vegetables, herbs, and fruit. So they embarked on a journey to start their own mini farm. Not long after their big city to country mouse move, COVID struck the world. Talk about stress! The land was there and ready to work the Bells.
Bell Valley Homestead was founded in 2019 by Changa & Devonna Bell. Nestled on 2 acres of land 50 minutes from downtown Baltimore they found a place to serve and call home. Already ripe for permaculture--with a well, windmill, solar power, pond and wooded areas--we felt empowered to start with the simple task of growing 80% of we eat. However, we dug in, and found clay! After decades of heavy farming, the large Bachman Farm was parceled to developers. The compacted clay, shale mix made the first growing season hardly productive. So began our journey to regenerate the soil.
